The Caretakers of His Creation
By Matt Walkoe   June 12th, 2018

Recently, we talked about the Great Commission: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15). For 2,000 years the focus of Christianity has been to preach the Gospel and baptize people into Jesus Christ. That is very important, however, the entire creation was made for Christ, both in the heavens and on earth. At some point, all of creation is to come under His Lordship.

In the beginning, man was created to be the caretaker of the Garden of Eden. It was the place of the Lord’s dominion—a microcosm of the Kingdom of God. But through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, the Garden was left without a caretaker. Mankind was usurped and displaced by Satan; now the earth is under his corrupt oversight.

The Kingdom of God is a government; God has many spiritual beings, principalities and powers, which have the responsibility of overseeing His Kingdom. Even though many of these beings have become corrupt, God cannot just remove them from their place. They need to be replaced, or the vacuum that is created will be disastrous. So, these corrupt forces must remain until the sons of God can displace them.

God is a God of order and government; He is in the process of displacing these corrupt rulers. He plans to use mankind as part of this displacement. All of these principalities and powers, which are much stronger and wiser than mankind, are going to be displaced by the sons of God. That is why a people must come into sonship. Sometimes we wonder, “Why does it take so long to establish God’s Kingdom on earth?” Because He is in the process of displacing these corrupt rulers.

As sons of God, our calling is to move into a spiritual level that will equip us to replace these authorities that must be removed. How does that happen? We do not start out as His sons; we must be adopted. He takes us out from under the dominion of these other lords, and transfers us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He saves us and delivers us from sin (Colossians 1:13-14).

But then the Lord says, “That is not enough. I am going to transform you into My image and adopt you as My sons.” He is faithfully leading us into this step by step. As we walk in each step, He will lead us into the next one. Ultimately, His plan is to use mankind to displace these corrupt authorities and restore the purpose that He gave to man in the beginning, to be the caretakers of His creation.
