Church of the Living Word

We Must Make Him Lord
By Matt Walkoe   August 19th, 2018

God wants to use us as His people as part of transitioning the governments of this world into the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ (Revelation 11:15). But how do we get there from here? First and foremost we must find the way to allow Christ to rule and reign over us: both in our personal lives, and in the way we function together as His Body. But because most church government is hierarchical, it places a human leader in charge, thereby rejecting Christ’s Lordship. In our drive to make Him Lord, we must be willing to abandon the existing forms of church government and find the way to put Christ back on the throne.

There is no form of government, in this or any other country, that will teach us how to live in God’s Kingdom, so the Body of Christ must train us how to function. As a loving Father, God is preparing us now to live in His Kingdom, under the Lordship of Christ. This begins with us relating properly to one another within Christ’s Body. We must relate to each other with humility and gentleness. Only Christ is to be Lord over His Body. He is referred to as our Savior sixteen times in the New Testament, but He is referred to as Lord over 700 times. If He is to be Lord over His Church we, as believers, must find the way to create a structure that makes Him Lord.

God gave the five-fold gift ministries to the Church (Ephesians 4:11), not to be the ones that do all the doing, but to equip the saints for the work of service. Their calling is to build up the Body of Christ. In a hierarchy, the one at the top is in charge, and they dictate everything and do everything. That is the complete opposite of God’s divine order. Hierarchy replaces Christ’s Lordship with a human representative.

By speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him (Ephesians 4:15). A hierarchy is characterized by people remaining silent when they see their leaders walking incorrectly. A sign of the Lordship of Christ is people speaking the truth in love to one another.

We must create the atmosphere for this to happen. As each member of the Body functions properly, it will cause the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love (Ephesians 4:16). Father, make us a prophetic community where Christ can rule and reign over us and over this church, as our only Lord.

The following Scriptures were referenced in this message and are included for further study: Philippians 2:9-11; Ephesians 4:1-6, 11-16; Exodus 3:10; (Acts 2:33, 36).
